What is the deck on the ship and what is it used for?

Apr 16, 2021

The deck is an important component of the hull. It is a plane structure located above the inner bottom of the ship structure, used to cover the inner space of the ship and divide it horizontally into layers. The deck is the steel plate on the ship beam, which separates the hull into upper, middle and lower layers.

The steel plate arranged in the horizontal direction of the hull is called the deck, and the hull is divided into upper and lower layers by the deck. The long deck at the bow and stern of the uppermost deck is called the upper deck. If all openings on this deck can be sealed and ensure watertightness, then this deck can also be called the main deck, which is also called the tonnage deck during measurement.

A small number of ocean-going ships also have an upper deck that penetrates the bow and stern on the main deck. Since the openings cannot guarantee watertightness, they can only be called shelter decks.

The deck divides the ship into upper and lower parts. The part above the main deck is collectively called the superstructure; the part below the main deck is called the main hull.

The long decks below the main deck are called second decks, third decks, etc. from top to bottom. Above the main deck are short decks, which are customarily named according to the name or purpose of the cabin on that deck. Such as bridge deck, life-boat deck and so on.

An open-air shell on the deck of a wooden ship along the gunwale. The lower part is supported by bulkheads and ribs, and there are joists under the deck of the ship. In addition to ensuring that the deck is watertight and for operating pedestrians, it also increases the overall strength of the hull. Separate deck, stern deck and side deck. The middle deck of the wooden deck barge is also called the deck, which is generally movable.
