How To Install EVA Foam Boat Flooring Myself?

May 07, 2024

Installing EVA foam boat flooring on your boat can be a rewarding DIY project. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you through the process:

Preparation:

Begin by thoroughly cleaning the boat's flooring surface to ensure proper adhesion of the EVA foam boat flooring.

Remove any items from the deck that can be taken out, and if necessary, power wash and scrub the boat.

Measuring and Cutting:

Measure the dimensions of the boat's floor area accurately.

Use poster board to make templates for curved or contoured areas.

Mark the direction of the routed lines on the foam sheets and cut them to the size and shape of the boat deck, cockpit, and walls.

Dry Fitting:

Dry fit the pieces to ensure they fit properly before applying any adhesive.

Adhesive Application:

Prep the surface with alcohol to clean and degrease the area first.

Apply a suitable adhesive to the back of the EVA Foam if it doesn't come with a peel-and-stick backing.

Installation:

Carefully align the foam sheets, starting from the center of the boat and working your way out, ensuring that the edges and angles are cut accurately.

For peel-and-stick types, peel the backing off and stick the foam sheets to the surface, starting from one end and working to the other.

Finishing Touches:

Cut around lids, hinges, and latches with a sharp knife, following the gaps and contours of the boat.

Sand the edges of the foam to round them and remove any burrs.

Use a lighter to melt any loose bits of foam and fix any lifting edges with stick or flex glue.

Curing:

Allow for proper curing time as recommended by the adhesive manufacturer before using the boat.

Remember to always follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific EVA foam boat flooring you are using. Good luck with your installation!
